Bulgaria 1950 BCG Vaccine

What can we learn from the health campaigns of the distant past? In the 1950s, in the early days of Communism in Bulgaria, a deadly wave of tuberculosis threatened the new socialist project. A mass vaccination campaign was launched, using the BCG vaccine which is still produced in Bulgaria today.

The archive film here shows the power of Soviet propaganda in inspiring citizens to get their vaccination and fight a formidable enemy.

This film was made with the financial support from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the Financial Mechanism of the European Economic Area.
