After the Hungarian revolution and the Soviet assault on Budapest in the autumn of 1956, oppression followed quickly in Sofia. As this propaganda film of the time shows, they are led by the new Bulgarian Communist Party leader Todor Zhivkov. A relatively unknown apparatchik until recently, Zhivkov was quick to use events in Hungary to crackdown on potential dissent at home. He remained in power for another 33 years. The victims' stories remained unheard for decades.
