Your History on Camera

About us

As a team we’ve decades of experience as BBC journalists. We’ve traveled all over Europe -- all the way to the Ural Mountains, and even further afield to the Middle East and Afghanistan. Every time we reported from abroad we felt we returned too quickly to the comfort of our desks in London or Brussels. We wondered what it would be like to stay on – to see what happened next to you, our audience. We also wanted to preserve the images of the past, from the pre-digital time, hoping that one day there would be a way of sharing them again.

We started out on YouTube in 2007 with our channel Balkani1. There were many images of war and destruction, but also tales of survival and high spirits. We chose the former Yugoslavia because of our close connections to the country and its people. The channel exceeded a million views, and opened a conversation between people from all over the world, who’d never have thought of speaking to each other.

Then we thought the time was right to move to our own space – we’re hoping it can soon be your space too. Balkani came with us. We added Bulgaria because it’s a stunning country with a dramatic history. BulgariaXXVek One of us defected from there in the 1980s, and it’s now our second home… “Red Square” will be about more than just Russia and Moscow …

We’d like you to get involved with us … to show us history from your point of view.

Were you in Sarajevo during the siege? Or in Belgrade during the NATO bombing? Perhaps your parents lived through the end of the Soviet Union? We’re interested in your stories … how events affected you and your family.

We’re hoping you’ll share your photos or video with us. Leave a comment here, or email us on the address we’ll have soon. And we’ll let you know how to do it. This website is still under construction, so watch out for the date of our launch.

My Century.tv is about your history on camera.
